This 4 day class offers instruction on recovering artifacts from a computer related to Internet investigations. The course will comprise the data that can be recovered from a personal computer that utilizes Internet browsers, America Online and the most popular instant messenger programs. The course will utilize lecture, hands-on exercises and mock scenario practical exercises to enhance the instruction. The students will also be provided a utility CD that includes full licenses for the majority of the applications used in class with a retail value over. The final ½ day of class will be an optional practical based Skills and Knowledge Assessment (SKA). Successful completion of the assessment will be noted on the attendee's attendance certificate.

This course is designed for both Law Enforcement personnel investing Internet related cases and corporate investigators monitoring and investigating Internet related activity in the business environment. This course is designed as a data recovery course, not an undercover investigative course. The course should be considered an intermediate level course. A basic forensic level of instruction is encouraged before attending FIRE. A working knowledge of the Windows registry is strongly encouraged.

The course will cover the latest versions of the following Internet browsers:

Internet Explorer
Netscape Navigator
Firefox
America Online
Data recovery for these applications will include; browser history, typed URLs, Internet cookies, auto-complete data, stored usernames/passwords, download activity, user profiles, temporary internet files (Internet cache), web based mail and MySpace.com artifacts.

The course will cover the latest versions of the following Instant Messengers:

America Online and AIM Instant Messengers
MSN Messenger
Yahoo Messenger
SkyPE Messenger
Data recovery for these applications will include; buddy/contact list interpretation, instant message recovery to include – DAT files, log files, unallocated space recovery, screen name and password recovery, file transfer and file sharing activity.
