 About FANNIEfannie_back_small.gif

Each FANNIE contains eight (8) Imaging bays which are directly accessible via the Ethernet network. Each imaging bay is capable of supporting both SATA and IDE hard drives. Each imaging bay has its own dedicated Gigabit Ethernet port for communication directly with a Gigabit switch. These bays are shareable between all workstations on the Forensic Area Network.

Although the imaging bays in the FANNIE are primarily intended for Read-Only operation, it is also possible to use them for shareable storage (mini-SAN) with full Read-Write operation. Connectivity in Read-Only or Read-Write configuration can be individually selected for each bay in the FANNIE.

Although it is quite possible to deploy a FANNIE on a common "storage" network, we recommend creating an isolated "acquisition" network just for imaging traffic. By using a Forensic Workstation with at least two separate Network Interface Cards (NIC's), one NIC can be used for access to the storage network, while one NIC is used strictly for image acquisition. This helps keep the imaging traffic separate from the storage, MIS, or IT related traffic for maximum performance. Additionally, if the "acquisition" NIC on each workstations is connected directly to a common Gigabit Ethernet switch, also shared by the FANNIE, each workstation is essentially guaranteed a dedicated Gigabit path to a selected acquisition bay.

The FANNIE imaging enclosure operates over pure AOE (ATAPI Over Ethernet) Ethernet Protocols. As such, no high level protocols (TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NETBEUI, etc) need to be associated with the NIC attached to the acquisition network. The workstations selectively attach and acquire from the imaging bays using only extremely efficient Ethernet protocols. Workstations with high quality NIC's can expect to achieve image acquisition speeds of 2 GB/Min and higher. Two access keys are provided for each FANNIE acquisition bay. One access key provides Read-Only access, and the other key provides full Read-Write access. Depending on your forensic network policies, you may choose to allow users to select which method to attach, or choose to never even publish the Read-Write keys thus ensuring no Read-Write access is ever performed.
